Percents

Hello!

We've spent this week working with percents.

We're  focusing on using the percent equation [ % x whole = part ] instead of proportional reasoning which will be explored more in 7th grade. I've encouraged students to first identify the missing piece to the equation (%, whole, or part) and then plug a variable in its place. Then they can identify and place the two given pieces of information in their appropriate places in the equation.

Here is a YouTube clip for your reference:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLI7OZIxDtg

*Please note that so far we've only used our understanding of "Fact Families" to solve one-step equations and we don't refer to it as "isolating the variable" as mentioned in the clip.

*Reminders:
- We'll be having an assessment on Percents this Monday, 12/22
- TenMarks due Tuesday, 12/23

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you're all enjoying your Thanksgiving break so far! I am so thankful for each and every one of my students. You are an inspiration and I'm grateful to be faced with your motivation, creativity, dedication, respect, and character each day. I hope your day is filled with family, friends, and lots of good food!

"Be kind, be thoughtful, be genuine, but most of all, be thankful."

*Reminder: There is NO TenMarks assignment due this Tuesday, 12/2. BUT...Don't forget to take some time to brush up on your long division skills!

Gobble, gobble!

Hi there!

I hope you all had a nice weekend and thanks for stopping by!

Just wanted to check in to give a few updates...

Last week we started working with percents in class, and it went really well! We kept it very basic for the introduction, but we'll be exploring percents more in-depth toward the end of this unit!

This week we'll be starting to compute with decimals. We'll start the week with a refresher on adding and subtracting decimals and we're scheduled to have a quiz this Thursday, 11/20. After that, we'll dive into multiplying and dividing decimals. In order to divide with decimals, students must be fluent in long division. If you're looking for some practice at home, this would be a great skill to work on!
  • Khan Academy has some great video tutorials as well as practice problems. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/multiplication-division/long_division/v/division-2
  • IXL also offers some free online practice, but there is a daily limit. Here is one link to try: http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-5/division-with-decimal-quotients

Don't forget that TenMarks assignments are due EVERY Tuesday, unless otherwise noted. There is an assignment due this Tuesday, 11/18. TenMarks provides great reinforcement and practice, and also allows students to become comfortable working on the computer. Students can always work on a JamSession if they have finished their mandatory assignment and are looking for more practice.

Hello!

Hope you enjoyed the lovely fall weather this weekend! While I hope you spent a lot of your time outdoors, I also hope you took some time to review for your first Quarterly Assessment tomorrow!

On Tuesday we will continue with Investigation 3 in Comparing Bits & Pieces and hope to wrap up the Unit by the end of the week. We're planning to have a Unit Test next week, before the break for Teacher's Convention. November 5th marks the end of the first marking period!

So, what FRACTION of the year have you (almost) completed so far? ;)

*Don't forget TenMarks Tuesday!!

Moving on...

We've spent the first month of school successfully making the transition into 6th grade. We have already finished our first unit, Prime Time. We explored factors, multiples, GCF, LCM, the Distributive Property, and much, much more!

Our next unit will be Comparing Bits & Pieces.

Here's a quick summary from CMP3:
"Rational numbers are at the heart of the middle-grades experience with number concepts. The goal of Comparing Bits and Pieces is to help students deepen their understanding of equivalent fractions and build on this understanding as they explore ratios. They will become skillful at interpreting the different forms of a rational number, at knowing which form is most appropriate for the solution of a given problem, and at writing and interpreting ratios."

Please keep your eye out for the parent letter with a short unit introduction and topic list that was sent home on Thursday, October 2.

We will also begin using Tenmarks regularly. Tenmarks is online math practice used to practice skills and reinforce concepts learned in class. Each student has been assigned a unique username and password.
